Here's a rumour that I thought I'd share with you. This is only a rumour. It'll show you how the truth can get distorted.
Back in 1986, when I started listening to Metallica, here's the reason Dave was kicked out of the band:
Like I said this was the rumour at the time (1986). So, here's the truth:

While on their way to NYC across North America in their rented U-haul, Dave got drunk (ok, so that part is true many times over). The guys had their pet pitbull with them (beats me if they did or did not, but why would they?). One night Dave got out of hand and beat the crap out of the dog. That was the final straw.
Dave was a mean drunk and the rest of the guys had had enough.
The story about the dog beating probably came from the story of Dave's pitbull jumping up at James (like young dogs are apt to do). James pushed the dog down (so it would not scratch the paint on the car he was leaning against).
Well, that's not how Dave saw it. He came running to the defense of his dog and it turned into a fight between him and James. He was kicked out of the band for that, but allowed back in after a cooling down time. Only to be kicked out for good after the trip across the USA.
